Why Apple Pay and Android Pay Don’t Work at Restaurants and Bars

NFC portable terminals are expensive
These terminals need to be integrated into the POS system and certified by the payment processors before they can be activated

In order to pay at the table, NFC terminals have to be portable
  • Portable terminals have to be charged

They can be easily dropped, stolen, or have drinks spilt on them

High friction experience
  • NFC does not work on phone orders
  • In order to pay, patrons have to wait for servers to bring NFC terminals to the table
  • Then, servers have to stand there awkwardly - while patrons enter the tip
  • Most venues have only a couple of these terminals, so the patrons get stuck having to wait until a terminal is available for use - no bueno
